Don’t Hire An SEO Agency If They Do This…

Not every SEO agency is built the same.

Most business owners evaluating an SEO agency compare the pricing, contract length, maybe a few client testimonials and case studies. Few stop to ask a more basic question: does this agency actually understand my industry? Or are they just in it for a quick buck? That question matters more than most owners realize, and the answer often explains why one agency's results consistently outperform another's, even when both are technically doing "the same things."

Here’s a red flag in this space that most people won’t tell you (especially not the agency reaching out to you): An agency that covers SEO for multiple unrelated industries. If they want to help your roofing business but they also help restaurants, hair salons, lawyers, and a bunch of other unrelated businesses, their SEO services might not perform as well as you think. We’ll explain why.

Why Every SEO Agency Isn't Built the Same

On paper, local SEO looks like a simple checklist: Google Business Profile optimization, citations, reviews, on-page content, backlinks. It's tempting to assume that if an agency has these mechanics down, the industry they're applied to shouldn't matter much.

But in practice, it matters quite a bit…

The mechanics are the same across industries; the execution isn't. What counts as authoritative content, which directories actually carry ranking weight, and what a searcher is actually trying to accomplish all shift dramatically depending on the industry. An agency that treats SEO as one universal playbook, applied identically whether the client is a roofer, a law firm, or a restaurant, is almost always leaving results on the table for at least some of those clients.

The Hidden Cost of an Agency That Works With Everyone

Agencies that market themselves as serving "any industry" aren't necessarily doing anything dishonest. But going wide has a real cost, and it usually shows up in one of two places.

1. Either the agency builds a genuinely distinct strategy, content approach, and citation plan for each unrelated industry it serves, which requires a huge amount of specialized staffing and knowledge that's expensive and hard to maintain at scale.

2. Or, more commonly, it applies one general-purpose SEO approach across every client, regardless of industry, which produces content that doesn’t use your expertise, leading to bland, generic content that is harder to rank. Plus a weaker overall SEO foundation everywhere it's used.

Neither option is inherently bad. It's simply the limit of trying to be an expert in everything at once.

This isn't just an opinion about how agencies should operate, it reflects how Google's own ranking systems evaluate content. Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines center on a framework called E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. The "Experience" component, added in September 2025, specifically rewards content created by people with genuine first-hand knowledge of a topic, not content that's technically accurate but written at arm's length from the subject.

For a home services business, that means content written by people who actually understand storm damage patterns, material trade-offs, and the way homeowners think through a $20,000 remodel decision, not a generic template repurposed from a legal or medical client. Google's own guidelines effectively reward the kind of deep, related-industry expertise that a generalist agency structurally struggles to produce across every vertical it serves.

Your Search Ranking Depends Heavily On This

Local SEO also depends heavily on citations: consistent business listings across directories that Google uses as trust signals. These directories aren't universal. Home services businesses build authority through platforms like Angi, HomeAdvisor, Houzz, and the BBB. Legal practices rely on an entirely different set, including Avvo, FindLaw, and Justia. Medical providers lean on platforms like Healthgrades and Vitals.

An agency serving law firms, restaurants, medical practices, and home services under one roof either has to build and maintain expertise across all of these separate ecosystems, or it applies a generic citation strategy that doesn't fully capture the directories that actually carry weight in each industry. Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors report, which surveys dozens of local SEO practitioners annually, consistently reinforces just how much local ranking depends on these kinds of industry and location-specific trust signals, not a one-size-fits-all checklist.

The Difference Between "Broad" and "Related" Specialization

None of this means the answer is hiring an agency that works with only one narrow niche. An agency that exclusively serves, say, only roofing companies may understand roofing deeply but lack the broader content and keyword strategy experience that comes from working across a wider range of client sizes and situations like remodeling, pest control, painting, etc.

The more useful distinction is between agencies spread across unrelated industries and agencies focused on a cluster of related ones. An agency fluent in home services businesses like roofing, remodeling, painting, junk removal, and custom home building can apply real, transferable pattern recognition across those clients, without the SEO depth thinning out the way it does when the same agency is also serving law firms, spas, and restaurants.

What to Ask Before Hiring an SEO Agency

A few direct questions tend to surface how deep an agency's expertise actually runs.

  • Ask what other industries they currently serve, and how closely related those industries are to yours.

  • Ask who's actually writing the content, and what they know about your specific field beyond general SEO best practices.

  • Ask which citation directories they prioritize for your industry specifically, not just their general process.

The answers usually reveal, within a few minutes, whether you're talking to an agency with real depth in your space or one applying a generic approach with your industry's name filled in.

Why Grandir Works Exclusively With Home Service Contractors

Grandir Solutions works only with home service and construction contractors: roofing, remodeling, painting, pest control, paving, deck building, junk removal, floor coating, and custom home building. It's the reason our content writers understand storm damage claims, material comparisons, and the way homeowners actually search before hiring a contractor, without needing to relearn an entirely different industry's language for the next client on the list.

Choose an SEO Agency That Actually Understands Your Industry

Not every SEO agency is built the same, and the difference often comes down to whether an agency's expertise is genuinely built around industries like yours, or spread thin across everything at once. Asking the right questions upfront can save months of underwhelming results.
