The Top Contractors Winning Your Area Don’t Want You To Know About This…

Almost every home improvement company has a website, but not all of them take advantage of this one page that has the potential to bring them 143% more visitors to their website if done right (which most contractors aren’t). That page? Blogs.

Blogs are one of the most powerful tools in ranking you higher on Google, and it’s a marketing powerhouse for local businesses. We’re here to give you the full breakdown of what blogs are, why they’re so important for getting leads for your business, and how you can start your own blog page today (even if you suck at writing).

What Is A Blog?

Think of a blog as a collection of helpful articles on your website. It answers the questions your future clients have at the top of their minds. You can use it to educate your audience about topics they’re unfamiliar with (like the cost of a kitchen remodel), persuade them to choose a certain service (why replacing your roof is better than repairing), or even show off past projects (how these homeowners went from old bungalow to contemporary on a budget).

It’s kind of like the script of a YouTube video.

The #1 Reason You Need a Blog

What makes blogs one of the best marketing tools for local contractors? Their SEO factor. If you’re unfamiliar with SEO, or search engine optimization, it’s the stuff that you do with your digital presence to help you land higher on google searches. If you’re on the first page of Google, you get up to 143% more visitors to your site as opposed to the second page.

There are two ways your blog improves your SEO.

  1. Googling Specific Problems

First, when someone searches for a specific question like “best flooring for basements” or “how to fix a leaky faucet,” your blog post can show up as the answer. If your content is helpful and people click on it, Google takes notice. It sees your site as trustworthy and starts ranking you higher in search results. (Later in this blog, we’ll show you how to get more eyes on your posts and drive even more readers.)

2. The “Near Me” Search

Another way blogs help your SEO is with “near me” searches. When someone looks up “custom home builder near me,” Google is more likely to show websites that actively post content (your blogs), helpful (the blogs aren’t stuffed with fluff), and tailored to your specific city. And a contractor with 20 blog posts that answer real customer questions is going to outrank one with a 2-page website from 2009.

Why Does This Work?

Google’s algorithm looks at your Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness, when deciding where to rank the businesses in your area. Blogs are a way to increase those 4 pillars by showing them and your readers that you know what you’re talking about, and the kind of services you offer and where.

Note: Posting blogs won’t instantly rank you higher. This is because it takes time for people to click on your blogs–anywhere from 1-6 months depending on how well written each blog is.

Blogs Make You More Trustworthy

Every homeowner is looking for a brand that they can consistently trust, but not all contractors actually show that. And when you’re competing against 10, 20, or even more contractors, that’s a lot of people you need to be more trustworthy than.

But here’s where your blogs come into play. It’s more than just having a blog, but writing content that actually helps your audience. And if you write in a way that your audience will understand (no technical jargon), you’ll look way more legit than the next guy who only relies on his gallery to sell his services. This leaves room for so many people that can become clients before they even meet you.

Blogs Keep People On Your Website Longer

The better content you write, the longer people stick around. And that’s a big deal because Google notices when visitors spend time on your site instead of clicking off after looking at your home page for 3 seconds. It’s a signal that your site is helpful and relevant, which can give your search rankings a boost.

But beyond pleasing Google, blogs also guide visitors naturally through your site. If someone clicks on a blog about “Top 5 Kitchen Remodel Mistakes to Avoid,” they’re clearly interested in remodeling. And if your post is valuable, they’ll likely head over to your Remodeling Services page, your Contact page, or even a before-and-after photo gallery of your kitchen transformations.

A good blog acts like a conversation starter. It gets potential clients in your digital doors and gives them a chance to “get to know you” before they pick up the phone. The more they read, the more they trust you and trust leads to phone calls, estimates, and booked projects.

Bottom Line: Blogs make trust, trust makes sales.

Blogs Can Be More Effective Than Social Media

When you post on Facebook, Instagram, or Youtube, it’s different. Those algorithms are designed to stop showing people your posts after a few days. Which means you have to constantly post more content to keep your business top of mind with your audience and grow your following.

But blogs on the other hand–if they’re well written–can bring in new visitors for months, or even years. If that blog on “The Top Interior Remodels In Atlanta That Never Go Out Of Style” gets clicked on over and over again, Google will keep showing it to more people. And the best part? You only had to write that once.

Added Bonus: The cool thing about marketing is that you can take snippets from your blog and turn them into social media posts and emails, turning your content into a cycle that can be repeated.

You Don’t Have To Be A Writer To Start Your Blog

If you’re worried that you won’t be able to write blog posts that get you more clients, don’t fret. You don’t need a marketing or an English degree to dominate your competition with this method. All you need is your expertise, and some extra time on your hands. It’s all about writing in a way your audience will understand–which is simplifying technical concepts and using terms that your readers are familiar with.

But if you’re swamped with client work but still want to add a blog to your page, we have a blog writer that can write your blogs for you. We do all the research to find out what your readers search for, what makes them click, and write Google-friendly blogs that rank higher than your competitors.

What Most Contractors Get Wrong About Blogs –Don’t Make These Mistakes

If you want to write your own informative blog for your home improvement website, don’t make these simple mistakes.

  1. Too Much Jargon

A lot of home improvement blogs use fancy remodeling and design terms that the average homeowner doesn’t understand. And if your blog is filled with these concepts, your audience will probably click off. Your blog should be something that your audience finds valuable, but that won’t happen if you’re writing like they’ve been in this business for 30 years. If you need to use those terms, make sure you explain it.

Here’s a rule of thumb: If they have to Google what you meant, you didn’t explain it well enough.

2. Writing About What You Find Interesting

Don’t get me wrong, you can write about interesting topics related to home design–but you have to make sure it’s stuff that your audience will actually read. I’ve seen contractors write posts about the technical specs of drills and flooring brands–most homeowners don’t want to read about that, they just want a nicer house. What really counts is what your audience cares about, because at the end of the day, that’s who you’re writing this for.

3. Not Optimized For SEO

It’s not just about writing whatever’s on your mind and throwing it up on your website. Each blog post has to be optimized for SEO if you want to maximize your ranking and how many visitors check it out. You’ll want to pick out a term or topic (also called a “keyword”)  that your audience is Googling, and center a blog post around it.

Here are some additional tips you can use to ensure your blog is Google-friendly:

  • Include images with alt tags

  • Use headings to organize your content

  • Include links to your other blogs and pages

  • Writing your own meta description

  • Writing at least 800-1000 words

How To Get Started With Your Home Improvement Blog (Even If You Suck At Writing)

Here’s what our blog writer (me) recommends to those starting their home improvement blog if they haven’t written something in the last 10 years:

  1. Brainstorm! Write down a list of problems your audience faces (even all the little ones)

  2. For every problem, write down a solution. Those are now your content ideas

  3. Once a month (or more) take one of those ideas and write about it for 800-1000 words

  4. Ensure it’s SEO optimized, and throw it onto your site

  5. If you have social media, share a post that announces each new blog post so you can maximize the amount of people who check it out

If your writing sucks, that’s totally okay when starting out–plus, you can always go back and edit them, unlike social media posts. The point is to get a little bit better with each post, so make sure you track the stats.

Bonus Tip: If you ever run out of content ideas, AI software like ChatGPT can give you a huge list of new ideas.

Case Study: #1 Ranking Blog For Our Client

We wrote a blog for one of our Seattle home renovation clients teaching their audience about the top 10 projects that add property value to their homes in Seattle. It was SEO optimized, and aimed to rank for the key word, “home renovation Seattle.”

What happened next was awesome:

  • Ranks first on the AI tab when you search for “projects that boost property value in seattle”

  • Ranks second on the organic search

  • It became their 3rd most viewed page on their site

  • Increased (on average) how long a user spends on their site by 52%

  • Decrease the rate at which users click off after only viewing 1 page (also called bounce rate) by 14%

  • Increased their page views by 37%

All from just one blog post that was posted 3 months ago. And with the way SEO works, Google will continue to show this blog to people who search for projects that add value in Seattle!

Outrank, Outshine, and Outbook the Competition

Now you know the overlooked marketing methods that’s slowly placing home improvement contractors at the top of Google rankings. By posting just 1 blog a month you can bridge the gap between you and your competitors, and prove to your audience that you’re the best in town.

–In fact, that’s exactly what we do with each of our Business Elite clients. Like the case study mentioned above, we write monthly blogs that rank you higher on Google and get more viewers onto your site. So if you want results like those, give us a shout!
