How to Deal With Burnout
November 30th, 2022
What is burnout?
Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by stress and being overworked. Everyone experiences burnout at some point, and it can be difficult to get back into your groove.
At Grandir, we value hard work and we understand the kind of grit it takes to be successful. We also understand the importance of balance, which is why one of our core values is People Work > Paper Work. Paper work often has deadlines, meaning we cannot always make time to place people first. With that being said, there is nothing that we value more than building and tending to relationships with our loved ones. The work that will always get done, but never at the expense of one’s well-being.
How to Deal with Burnout as a Business Owner:
Express Gratitude
A 2021 Harvard psychology study found that gratitude is strongly associated with consistent and greater happiness. “Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.” Expressing gratitude as a business owner and encouraging it from your employees helps people connect to something larger than themselves and remember the purpose of what they do. When you find yourself experiencing burnout, look for ways you can give thanks and show appreciation for the people and circumstances around you.
Support from others
Social contact is nature’s antidote to stress. Healthy interactions between coworkers, family, and friends, are one of the fastest ways to calm your nervous system and relieve stress. In a burnout, we often feel more weight on our shoulders than ever. As a business owner, checking in on your employees and scheduling social events outside of work creates a welcoming and safe environment. Always remember that you are not alone, and to lean on your people when you find yourself hitting a wall.
Take a break
When you dream big, like us, it requires a lot of time, energy, and passion to achieve your goals. However, it’s important to take a break from work. Scheduling mental health days for employees gives everyone time to relax and de-stress, which ultimately increases productivity when people are at work. Find whatever it is that helps you clear your mind, whether that’s fishing, reading a book, taking a walk, or even binge-watching your favorite Netflix show. As humans, we brush our teeth every day because we care about maintaining our healthy teeth. In the same way, we must care for our brain. Time off and a healthy work-life balance allow our brain to stay sharp through all the chaos.
